Where is Sehra?

Sehra is a village in Rajpura tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rajpura, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rajpura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036977, and it covers 503 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,447 people in Sehra: 785 men and 662 women, living in 261 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 503 hectares, the population density works out to about 288 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 843 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 162, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 521 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.3 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.07 per cent and women at 76.13 per cent. The census recorded 460 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 418 main workers, the largest group, 254, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 145 cultivators on their own land and 17 agricultural labourers. A further 42 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sehra's land. Of the village's 503 hectares, 479 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 469 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (75 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (394 hectares). About 24 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 149 cultivators and 20 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The village had a sub post office. It also had a PDS ration shop, mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre.
