Where is Bharatgarh?

Bharatgarh is a village in Rupnagar tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rupnagar community development block and is served by the Bharat Garh gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038599, and it covers 425 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,732 people in Bharatgarh: 1,408 men and 1,324 women, living in 587 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 425 hectares, the population density works out to about 643 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 940 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 266, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 890 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.63 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.13 per cent and women at 83.96 per cent. The census recorded 784 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 749 main workers, the largest group, 488, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 121 household industry workers and 111 agricultural labourers. A further 35 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bharatgarh's land. Of the village's 425 hectares, 109 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 67 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (66 hectares). About 295 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. The census recorded 31 cultivators and 125 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Rupnagar, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kakrala, Kharota, Bara Pind and Himatpur.
