Where is Bhaton?

Bhaton is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038485, and it covers 48 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 895 people in Bhaton: 474 men and 421 women, living in 163 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 48 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,865 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 888 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 107, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 76 people, about 8 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.58 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.78 per cent and women at 72.82 per cent. The census recorded 275 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 265 main workers, the largest group, 142, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 94 other workers in trade, transport and services and 25 agricultural labourers. A further 10 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bhaton's land. Of the village's 48 hectares, 42 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 34 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (34 hectares). About 6 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 143 cultivators and 26 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Rupnagar, about 16 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Takhatgarh, Bhogipur, Bahman Majra and Jatwahar.
