Where is Jhandian?

Jhandian is a village of Anandpur Sahib tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 22 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Jhandian Kalan, Jhandian Khurd gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038482, and it covers 367 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,349 people in Jhandian: 1,196 men and 1,153 women, living in 455 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 367 hectares, the population density works out to about 640 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 964 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 289, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 389 people, about 17 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.54 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.43 per cent and women at 68.34 per cent. The census recorded 1,011 workers, about 43 per cent of the village. Of the 713 main workers, the largest group, 343, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 321 other workers in trade, transport and services and 31 household industry workers. A further 298 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Neighbouring villages include Tibba Nangal, Bahman Majra, Balewal and Takhatgarh.
