Where is Chaklan?

Chaklan is a village in Rupnagar tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rupnagar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038750, and it covers 115 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 299 people in Chaklan: 159 men and 140 women, living in 56 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 115 hectares, the population density works out to about 260 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 881 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 22, about 7 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 8 people, about 3 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 90.25 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.88 per cent and women at 86.15 per cent. The census recorded 77 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 40 main workers, the largest group, 19, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 15 other workers in trade, transport and services and 5 agricultural labourers. A further 37 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chaklan's land. Of the village's 115 hectares, 94 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 83 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (83 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. The census recorded 21 cultivators and 37 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
