Where is Khabra?

Khabra is a village in Rupnagar tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rupnagar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038739, and it covers 219 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,165 people in Khabra: 614 men and 551 women, living in 238 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 219 hectares, the population density works out to about 532 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 897 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 83, about 7 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 277 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.97 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.93 per cent and women at 81.45 per cent. The census recorded 843 workers, about 72 per cent of the village. Of the 437 main workers, the largest group, 166, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 165 agricultural labourers and 61 cultivators on their own land. A further 406 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Khabra's land. Of the village's 219 hectares, 186 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (186 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. The census recorded 65 cultivators and 171 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Rupnagar, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Goslan, Haripur Alias Rormajra, Solkhian and Singh.
