Where is Panjola?

Panjola is a village of Rupnagar tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rupnagar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038730, and it covers 206 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,021 people in Panjola: 535 men and 486 women, living in 173 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 206 hectares, the population density works out to about 496 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 908 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 87, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 280 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.48 per cent and women at 74.83 per cent. The census recorded 653 workers, about 64 per cent of the village. Of the 617 main workers, the largest group, 326, were household industry workers, ahead of 130 agricultural labourers and 98 cultivators on their own land. A further 36 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Panjola's land. Of the village's 206 hectares, 137 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 131 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (131 hectares). About 60 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. The census recorded 109 cultivators and 132 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
