Where is Saheri?

Saheri is a village of Morinda tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Morinda, about 1 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Morinda community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038918, and it covers 266 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,495 people in Saheri: 808 men and 687 women, living in 293 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 266 hectares, the population density works out to about 562 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 850 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 143, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 734 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.95 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.02 per cent and women at 75.97 per cent. The census recorded 520 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 494 main workers, the largest group, 282, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 130 agricultural labourers and 63 cultivators on their own land. A further 26 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Saheri's land. Of the village's 266 hectares, 238 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (238 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 65 cultivators and 134 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
