Where is Samundari?

Samundari is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nangal, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Sammundarin, Sammundarin Bhanuha gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038350, and it covers 175 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,108 people in Samundari: 542 men and 566 women, living in 213 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 175 hectares, the population density works out to about 633 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1044 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 171, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 264 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.45 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.39 per cent and women at 61.07 per cent. The census recorded 281 workers, about 25 per cent of the village. Of the 279 main workers, the largest group, 156, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 109 cultivators on their own land and 13 agricultural labourers. A further 2 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Samundari's land. Of the village's 175 hectares, 102 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 92 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (92 hectares). About 26 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 109 cultivators and 13 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Nangal, about 14 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kahanpur, Haripur, Boothgarh and Palahta.
