Where is Sawara?

Sawara is a village in Anandpur Sahib tehsil of Rupnagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Anandpur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038344, and it covers 465 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 439 people in Sawara: 232 men and 207 women, living in 89 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 465 hectares, the population density works out to about 94 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 892 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 51, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 46 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.81 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.21 per cent and women at 60.44 per cent. The census recorded 207 workers, about 47 per cent of the village. Of the 180 main workers, the largest group, 159, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 12 other workers in trade, transport and services and 5 agricultural labourers. A further 27 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Sawara's land. Of the village's 465 hectares, 328 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 303 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (303 hectares). About 98 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 161 cultivators and 24 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Anandpur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Rupnagar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Nalhoti, Mahain, Raisera and Dher.
