Where is Rajal Heri?

Rajal Heri is a village in Moonak tehsil of Sangrur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Moonak, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Andana community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039918, and it covers 377 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,116 people in Rajal Heri: 592 men and 524 women, living in 211 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 377 hectares, the population density works out to about 296 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 885 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 155, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 411 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 58.79 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 64.17 per cent and women at 52.76 per cent. The census recorded 356 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 340 main workers, the largest group, 154, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 127 agricultural labourers and 54 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 16 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Rajal Heri's land. Of the village's 377 hectares, 349 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (67 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (282 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 154 cultivators and 141 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
