The Jind capital

Sangrur was the capital of the princely state of Jind, one of the three Phulkian states founded by the descendants of Phul. The town keeps the marks of its royal past: the Banasar Bagh gardens, the old palace buildings, and the clock tower that anchors the town centre. The state merged into the Patiala and East Punjab States Union in 1948.

The district around it is deep Malwa farmland, among the most productive in Punjab. Its villages grow wheat and paddy in the canal-irrigated plain, and its mandi towns have traded grain for generations.

Sunam and Udham Singh

The town of Sunam, in this district, was the birthplace of Udham Singh, the revolutionary who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. His ancestral home and the memorial in Sunam draw visitors through the year, and the town's name is inseparable from his. Dhuri, Moonak and Lehra are the district's other old market towns, each with its grain market and its fairs.

The district today

Sangrur district counted about 1.23 million people in 2011 across roughly 3,685 square kilometres, making it one of Punjab's larger districts by area. Sangrur town remains an administrative and market centre, while Dirba, Longowal and Bhawanigarh serve the southern belt.
