Kalajhar is a village in Bhawanigarh tehsil of Sangrur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhawanigarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039693, and it covers 385 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,519 people in Kalajhar: 785 men and 734 women, living in 283 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 385 hectares, the population density works out to about 395 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 935 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 142, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 567 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.79 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.9 per cent and women at 61.25 per cent. The census recorded 498 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 496 main workers, the largest group, 199, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 150 agricultural labourers and 143 other workers in trade, transport and services. It also had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. Banking was available in the village itself, with a cooperative bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 18 hours a day.
