Where is Kheri Chandwan?

Kheri Chandwan is a village in Bhawanigarh tehsil of Sangrur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhawanigarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039721, and it covers 214 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 744 people in Kheri Chandwan: 388 men and 356 women, living in 146 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 214 hectares, the population density works out to about 348 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 918 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 81, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 374 people, about 50 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.15 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.94 per cent and women at 64.91 per cent. The census recorded 341 workers, about 46 per cent of the village. Of the 318 main workers, the largest group, 100, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 81 other workers in trade, transport and services and 77 cultivators on their own land. A further 23 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Kheri Chandwan's land. Of the village's 214 hectares, 198 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (198 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Bhawanigarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Sangrur, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Ramnagar Alias Ghumand Singhwala, Sangatpura, Rai Singhwala and Harkishanpura.
