Where is Dhelpur?

Dhelpur is a village in SAS Nagar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Banur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039215, and it covers 193 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 770 people in Dhelpur: 386 men and 384 women, living in 114 households, an average of about 6.8 people per household. Spread over its 193 hectares, the population density works out to about 399 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 995 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 87, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 192 people, about 25 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.24 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.72 per cent and women at 84.75 per cent. The census recorded 479 workers, about 62 per cent of the village. Of the 446 main workers, the largest group, 205, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 178 household industry workers and 58 agricultural labourers. A further 33 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dhelpur's land. Of the village's 193 hectares, 169 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (169 hectares). About 24 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 5 cultivators and 64 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
