Where is Gharuan?

Gharuan is a village of Kharar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kurali, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039041, and it covers 1,429 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,302 people in Gharuan: 3,324 men and 2,978 women, living in 1,254 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 1,429 hectares, the population density works out to about 441 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 896 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 638, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,728 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.01 per cent and women at 79.7 per cent. The census recorded 2,046 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 1,727 main workers, the largest group, 834, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 605 cultivators on their own land and 195 agricultural labourers. A further 319 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Gharuan's land. Of the village's 1,429 hectares, 1,255 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 965 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (965 hectares). About 169 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 653 cultivators and 296 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Kharar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Hasanpur, Machhipur, Barauli and Fatehpur Ther I.
