Where is Machhipur?

Machhipur is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039042, and it covers 127 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 577 people in Machhipur: 309 men and 268 women, living in 115 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 127 hectares, the population density works out to about 454 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 867 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 67, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 322 people, about 56 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.76 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.5 per cent and women at 76.27 per cent. The census recorded 182 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 127 main workers, the largest group, 90, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 36 cultivators on their own land and 1 agricultural labourers. A further 55 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (115 hectares). About 12 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Kharar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Gharuan, Fatehpur Ther I, Hasanpur and Sil Kapra.
