Where is Ghataur?

Ghataur is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and is served by the Gharaur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039058, and it covers 200 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,191 people in Ghataur: 631 men and 560 women, living in 236 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 200 hectares, the population density works out to about 596 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 887 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 132, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 524 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.71 per cent and women at 79.48 per cent. The census recorded 384 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 246 main workers, the largest group, 177, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 60 cultivators on their own land and 5 household industry workers. A further 138 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Ghataur's land. Of the village's 200 hectares, 173 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 162 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (162 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 83 cultivators and 31 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
