Where is Khizargarh?

Khizargarh is a village in SAS Nagar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Zirakpur, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rajpura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039235, and it covers 274 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,710 people in Khizargarh: 888 men and 822 women, living in 310 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 274 hectares, the population density works out to about 624 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 217, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 543 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.99 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.62 per cent and women at 81.15 per cent. The census recorded 544 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 489 main workers, the largest group, 213, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 200 cultivators on their own land and 70 agricultural labourers. A further 55 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Khizargarh's land. Of the village's 274 hectares, 247 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 232 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (232 hectares). About 27 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 214 cultivators and 81 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

SAS Nagar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Karala, Rampur Kalan, Khaspur and Mathiaran.
