Where is Mirzapur?

Mirzapur is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kurali, about 25 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majri community development block and is served by the Mizapur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038959, and it covers 1,541 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 481 people in Mirzapur: 268 men and 213 women, living in 84 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 1,541 hectares, the population density works out to about 31 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 795 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 69, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 116 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.99 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.58 per cent and women at 56.82 per cent. The census recorded 175 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 173 main workers, the largest group, 128, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 37 agricultural labourers and 8 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 2 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (116 hectares). About 63 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Kharar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Gochar, Burana, Tarapur and Dulwan.
