Where is Niamian?

Niamian is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039110, and it covers 97 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 411 people in Niamian: 213 men and 198 women, living in 69 households, an average of about 6.0 people per household. Spread over its 97 hectares, the population density works out to about 424 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 930 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 42, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 128 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.45 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.02 per cent and women at 80.66 per cent. The census recorded 124 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 109 main workers, the largest group, 53, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 49 cultivators on their own land and 6 agricultural labourers. A further 15 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Niamian's land. Of the village's 97 hectares, 97 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 85 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (85 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 49 cultivators and 13 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Niamian is reached by pucca, all-weather roads, and the 2011 directory recorded a private bus service in the village itself. The directory recorded Kharar, about 10 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Kharar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Basian, Pannuan, Dharak Khurd and Malikpur.
