Where is Patran?

Patran is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kharar, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kharar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039137, and it covers 170 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 529 people in Patran: 279 men and 250 women, living in 104 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 170 hectares, the population density works out to about 311 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 896 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 54, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 214 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.63 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.27 per cent and women at 69.2 per cent. The census recorded 199 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 176 main workers, the largest group, 116, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 57 cultivators on their own land and 3 agricultural labourers. A further 23 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Patran's land. Of the village's 170 hectares, 154 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 116 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (116 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 57 cultivators and 5 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Kharar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Soey Majra, Chudiala, Machhli Khurd and Chuhar Majra.
