Where is Sialba?

Sialba is a village of Kharar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kurali, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039069, and it covers 146 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,034 people in Sialba: 544 men and 490 women, living in 216 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 146 hectares, the population density works out to about 708 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 901 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 143, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 831 people, about 80 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.7 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.08 per cent and women at 65.96 per cent. The census recorded 308 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 270 main workers, the largest group, 250, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 8 household industry workers and 7 cultivators on their own land. A further 38 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sialba's land. Of the village's 146 hectares, 117 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 85 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (85 hectares). About 22 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 10 cultivators and 6 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Chandpur, Jhande Majra, Khairpur and Khera.
