Where is Asron?

Asron is a village of Balachaur tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rupnagar, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Balachaur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032390, and it covers 632 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,832 people in Asron: 1,018 men and 814 women, living in 421 households, an average of about 4.4 people per household. Spread over its 632 hectares, the population density works out to about 290 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 800 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 172, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 81 people, about 4 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.39 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 94.33 per cent and women at 76.17 per cent. The census recorded 661 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (22 hectares). About 184 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 24 cultivators and 28 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
