Where is Taunsa?

Taunsa is a village of Balachaur tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Balachaur, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Balachaur community development block and is served by the Taunsa And Bholewal gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032391, and it covers 798 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,144 people in Taunsa: 1,680 men and 1,464 women, living in 655 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 798 hectares, the population density works out to about 394 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 871 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 389, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,550 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.25 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.43 per cent and women at 64.83 per cent. The census recorded 1,041 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 924 main workers, the largest group, 708, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 136 household industry workers and 57 cultivators on their own land. A further 117 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (305 hectares). About 97 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 58 cultivators and 30 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Asron, Bana, Fatehpur and Bela Tajowal.
