Where is Bharta Kalan?

Bharta Kalan is a village of Nawanshahr tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nawansahar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Aur community development block and is served by the Bharda Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032276, and it covers 448 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,747 people in Bharta Kalan: 882 men and 865 women, living in 355 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 448 hectares, the population density works out to about 390 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 981 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 171, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 347 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.68 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.53 per cent and women at 75.77 per cent. The census recorded 547 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 399 main workers, the largest group, 232, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 112 cultivators on their own land and 45 agricultural labourers. A further 148 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
