Where is Bhaini Mattuan?

Bhaini Mattuan is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarn Taran community development block and is served by the Bhaini Mathuwan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037924, and it covers 215 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,124 people in Bhaini Mattuan: 608 men and 516 women, living in 194 households, an average of about 5.8 people per household. Spread over its 215 hectares, the population density works out to about 523 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 849 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 132, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 348 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.04 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.76 per cent and women at 62.5 per cent. The census recorded 804 workers, about 72 per cent of the village. Of the 783 main workers, the largest group, 345, were household industry workers, ahead of 168 cultivators on their own land and 166 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 21 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (151 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (41 hectares). About 23 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
