Where is Ghagge?

Ghagge is a village of Khadur Sahib tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khadur Sahib community development block and is served by the Ghagga gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038322, and it covers 123 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 958 people in Ghagge: 493 men and 465 women, living in 170 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 123 hectares, the population density works out to about 779 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 943 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 113, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 424 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.74 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.17 per cent and women at 72.15 per cent. The census recorded 398 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 385 main workers, the largest group, 144, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 139 agricultural labourers and 95 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 13 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ghagge's land. Of the village's 123 hectares, 112 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (112 hectares). About 11 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 146 cultivators and 144 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
