Where is Jeobala?

Jeobala is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarn Taran community development block and is served by the Jiobala gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037933, and it covers 893 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,976 people in Jeobala: 2,103 men and 1,873 women, living in 701 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 893 hectares, the population density works out to about 445 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 891 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 490, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 985 people, about 25 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.99 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.01 per cent and women at 61.23 per cent. The census recorded 1,217 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 1,122 main workers, the largest group, 458, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 324 agricultural labourers and 279 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 95 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jeobala's land. Of the village's 893 hectares, 840 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (97 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (743 hectares). About 51 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 475 cultivators and 359 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Jhamke, Manochahal, Aima Malian and Kot Jaspat.
