Where is Rai Shiana?

Rai Shiana is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarn Taran community development block and is served by the Rai Siana gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037955, and it covers 188 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,656 people in Rai Shiana: 858 men and 798 women, living in 300 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 188 hectares, the population density works out to about 881 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 930 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 218, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 651 people, about 39 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.48 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.36 per cent and women at 60.09 per cent. The census recorded 504 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 416 main workers, the largest group, 166, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 128 other workers in trade, transport and services and 104 agricultural labourers. A further 88 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Rai Shiana's land. Of the village's 188 hectares, 158 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (158 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 194 cultivators and 139 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Sheikh Chak, Shangarpur, Malmohri and Warana.
