Where is Sakkianwali?

Sakkianwali is a village in Khadur Sahib tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khadur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038329, and it covers 301 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,162 people in Sakkianwali: 591 men and 571 women, living in 216 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 301 hectares, the population density works out to about 386 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 966 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 150, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 413 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.01 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.09 per cent and women at 65.87 per cent. The census recorded 385 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 311 main workers, the largest group, 133, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 114 cultivators on their own land and 45 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 74 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (273 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Khadur Sahib, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bodewal, Sarai Talwandi, Gill Kaler and Devlanwal.
