Where is Thathgarh?

Thathgarh is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gandiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037863, and it covers 726 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,579 people in Thathgarh: 1,339 men and 1,240 women, living in 438 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 726 hectares, the population density works out to about 355 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 338, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,199 people, about 46 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.65 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.24 per cent and women at 65.92 per cent. The census recorded 806 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 666 main workers, the largest group, 249, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 206 cultivators on their own land and 206 agricultural labourers. A further 140 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Thathgarh's land. Of the village's 726 hectares, 643 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (643 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 207 cultivators and 305 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
