Where is Wring?

Wring is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Chohla Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037977, and it covers 302 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,501 people in Wring: 794 men and 707 women, living in 285 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 302 hectares, the population density works out to about 497 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 179, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 621 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.09 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.91 per cent and women at 54.7 per cent. The census recorded 386 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 219 main workers, the largest group, 155, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 54 other workers in trade, transport and services and 6 agricultural labourers. A further 167 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Wring's land. Of the village's 302 hectares, 278 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (278 hectares). About 24 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 163 cultivators and 47 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Tarn Taran, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kahlwan, Mohanpura, Kishangarh and Waryah.
