History at a glance
Derby is a city and unitary authority in Derbyshire, England, standing on the River Derwent in the south of the county, with around 261,400 residents in the 2021 census. Its Punjabi community is one of the most concentrated in the East Midlands: the census counted 9,762 Sikhs in Derby, 3.7 per cent of the city, roughly four times the England share, centred on Normanton, where four gurdwaras stand within a few streets and the National Sikh Museum tells the British Sikh story.
Where is Derby, and why do Punjabis live there?
Derby lies on the banks of the River Derwent, south of the Derwent Valley and north of the Trent valley, and was traditionally the county town of Derbyshire. The Romans settled the town of Derventio here, and the Vikings later made Derby one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. For centuries it was a market town. Its modern story begins with industry: Lombe's Mill, the Derby silk mill built in the early 18th century, was an early British factory, and Derby has a claim to be one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. The railways arrived in the 19th century and made Derby a centre of the British rail industry, a role it still holds, and Rolls-Royce made the city a centre of aero-engine building, today the world's second largest maker of aero engines. Derby became a cathedral city in 1927, when All Saints Church was raised to a cathedral, and received full city status in 1977.
Those factories, foundries, rail works and engineering shops are why Punjabis came. Like other East and West Midlands cities, Derby drew Commonwealth workers after the Second World War, and Punjabi families arrived for industrial work, settled first where the housing was affordable, and built institutions as wives, children and elders followed. The settlement concentrated south of the city centre in Normanton and Pear Tree, and it stayed: Derby is listed under Punjabi places in the United Kingdom.
What do the numbers say?
Derby's population rose by 5.1 per cent between the censuses, from around 248,800 in 2011 to around 261,400 in 2021. Sikhs numbered 9,762 people, 3.7 per cent of residents, against 1.1 per cent across the East Midlands and 0.9 per cent across England. That share makes Derby one of the most Sikh cities in England outside London and the West Midlands conurbation. The wider Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh group was 15.6 per cent of the city in 2021, up from 12.5 per cent in 2011, and Derby's Punjabi story runs through two birth countries, because many local Punjabi families trace roots to both sides of the 1947 border: just over 7,100 residents, 2.7 per cent, were born in India, up from around 5,400 in 2011, and just under 8,100, 3.1 per cent, were born in Pakistan, the city's second most common country of birth after England.
For the Punjabi language, this entry states the limit of the opened figures plainly: no Derby Punjabi speaker count from the 2021 census appears in the sources opened for this entry, so none is invented here. The religion and birth figures above are the census evidence this page rests on, and they already show a community of close to ten thousand Sikhs in a city of a quarter of a million.
Normanton: Derby's Punjabi heart
Normanton, about two miles south of the city centre, is the most ethnically diverse part of Derby and holds the largest concentration of the city's British Asian community. In the 2011 census the Normanton ward was 67 per cent non-White British, with around 43 per cent of its people from an Asian background. Its terraced streets around Normanton Road and Pear Tree Road carry the full life of Punjabi Derby: gurdwaras, mosques, a Hindu temple, Punjabi shops and the businesses that serve them. Each year the local Sikh community holds a Vaisakhi parade around Normanton from the gurdwara: the 2012 parade drew between ten and fifteen thousand people onto streets decked in orange.
Gurdwaras and the National Sikh Museum
Four gurdwaras serve Normanton. The Guru Arjan Dev Ji Gurdwara, at 1 Stanhope Street, describes itself as Derby's first and oldest Sikh temple, holding prayers and langar for up to 5,000 worshippers a week. On Princes Street stands the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, with Punjabi and religious education for children and a heritage centre. The Ramgarhia Gurdwara serves the Ramgarhia community, and the Guru Ravidass Gurdwara stands on Duncan Road.
Derby also holds a national first. The National Sikh Museum, on Princes Street, began when a group of young Sikhs set out over three decades ago to tell the British Sikh version of their heritage, and with the energy and commitment of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara the first National Sikh Heritage Centre and Holocaust Museum was launched in November 2009, described by the museum as the first of its kind in the world, created to mark the 300th anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. A city of Derby's size carrying Britain's national Sikh museum says much about how deep its Punjabi roots run.
Derby is the East Midlands' quiet Punjabi stronghold: a rail and Rolls-Royce city where nearly one resident in twenty seven is Sikh, where four gurdwaras anchor one neighbourhood, and where the national museum of British Sikh heritage stands. Its nearest counterparts in this series are Leicester and Coventry. For the full map, see Punjabi places in the United Kingdom.
