History at a glance
Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, northwestern England, standing on the east bank of the River Irwell, with 551,938 residents in the 2021 census. Its Punjabi community is the North West's quiet one: smaller than the big Midlands centres, but rooted since the post-war decades, with five gurdwaras in the city, 2,718 Sikhs counted in 2021 and an Indian ethnic group of 14,857 people, inside one of the most diverse cities in England.
Where is Manchester, and why do Punjabis live there?
Manchester sits on a plain at the foot of the Pennines, enclosed by the Pennine slopes to the east and the Rossendale upland to the north, with Salford and Trafford adjoining it to the west and southwest. Most of the city, including its historic core, lies in the historic county of Lancashire, with an area south of the River Mersey in historic Cheshire. In 1717 it was merely a market town of 10,000 people. Cotton changed everything: the first cotton mill was built in the early 1780s, by 1830 there were 99 cotton spinning mills, and the town the world called Cottonopolis became, by 1835, without challenge the first and greatest industrial city in the world. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, opened in 1830, was the world's first modern railway, and the Manchester Ship Canal, opened in 1894, made inland Manchester the country's fourth busiest port by 1910.
Mills, engineering and work are why Punjabis came, as they did to every Lancashire and Midlands mill town after the Second World War. Manchester's Punjabi settlement never matched Birmingham or Wolverhampton in size, and the city's wider South Asian story is led by its large Pakistani community, but Punjabi families from both sides of the 1947 border made homes here, worked, raised children and built gurdwaras that still anchor the community today. Manchester is listed under Punjabi places in the United Kingdom.
What do the numbers say?
Manchester grew by 9.7 per cent between the censuses, from just over 503,100 people in 2011 to 551,938 in 2021, making it the most densely populated local authority area in the North West, with a young median age of 31. Sikhs numbered 2,718 people, 0.5 per cent of residents, up from 2,292 in 2011 and 1,708 in 2001: a small share, growing slowly and steadily across three censuses. The Indian ethnic group numbered 14,857 people, 2.7 per cent of the city, up from 11,417 in 2011, within an Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh total of 115,109, 20.9 per cent of Manchester. Hindus numbered 6,048 and Muslims 122,962, 22.3 per cent, the city's second largest faith group.
The birthplace figures show why Manchester's Punjabi story runs through two countries. Pakistan was the city's most common overseas country of birth, with around 30,700 residents, 5.6 per cent, up from just over 20,700 in 2011, and India followed among the top countries at 1.6 per cent of residents. Many families in both groups speak Punjabi at home, alongside Urdu and other languages. For the language itself, this entry states the limit of the opened figures plainly: the census tables opened for this entry publish Manchester's main languages only in summary, with no Punjabi speaker count, so none is invented here. The religion and ethnicity counts above are the census evidence this page rests on.
Cheetham Hill, Whalley Range and the south side
Punjabi Manchester is spread across the city rather than gathered in one quarter. In the north, Cheetham Hill has long been one of Manchester's most diverse districts, and the Gurdwara Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji stands in the heart of the city side of that story, run entirely by sevadaars under the motto of seva, simran and gurmat, with a strong focus on youth learning kirtan. In the southwest, Whalley Range and the Upper Chorlton Road corridor hold the community's oldest surviving institution. On the south side, the Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurdwara on Monton Street serves the neighbourhoods around Rusholme and Moss Side, opening at 6 in the morning on Sundays for Parkash, Sukhmani Sahib, kirtan and langar. Between the gurdwaras, Punjabi life in Manchester runs through family businesses, takeaways and shops, students at the city's universities, and professionals across Greater Manchester who travel in for diwans.
Five gurdwaras and a turban campaign
Manchester has five gurdwaras. The best documented is the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara Educational and Cultural Centre, established in 1961 as one of the five, beginning in a terraced house at 35 Rosamond Street West in Hulme, moving through Upper Brook Street, and now standing in purpose built premises at 57 Upper Chorlton Road in Whalley Range. Its history carries a piece of national Sikh history: a member of the gurdwara, Gyani Sundar Singh Sagar, fought for turban wearing Sikh men to be exempt from the law on motorcycle helmets, a campaign Sikhs across Britain still benefit from. The Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurdwara on Monton Street runs the classic weekly round of nitnem, Sukhmani Sahib, kirtan, ardas and langar, and the Harkrishan Sahib gurdwara streams and teaches kirtan to the next generation. Together the five carry the standard work of Punjabi institutions in Britain: worship, langar open to all, Punjabi and religious teaching, and a door open to the whole city.
Manchester gave the world the industrial city, and its Punjabi community is a modest but durable part of the city that followed: five gurdwaras, a community counted in the census since 2001 and growing each decade, in a city where more than two residents in five are from an ethnic minority. Its Yorkshire counterpart in this series is Leeds. For the full map, see Punjabi places in the United Kingdom.
