Fresno is the largest city in California's San Joaquin Valley, a farming city near the geographic centre of the state, and one of the oldest Punjabi centres in the southern Central Valley. A 2020 derived estimate puts about 13,743 Sikhs in the city, 2.54 per cent of its 542,107 residents, because the United States census does not ask about religion.

Where is Fresno, and why do Punjabis live there?

Fresno is the county seat of Fresno County in the San Joaquin Valley, about 170 miles south of Sacramento and 220 miles north of Los Angeles. Founded as a railway station in 1872 and incorporated in 1885, it had 542,107 residents in the 2020 census, making it the fifth most populous city in California and the most populous inland city in the state. The wider metropolitan area counted 1,164,909 people.

Punjabis live here because of farming and family. The irrigated fields around Fresno, growing grapes, almonds, stone fruit and row crops, drew Punjabi farm workers from the early 1900s, and work became land, businesses and families. Later arrivals followed relatives, gurdwaras and Punjabi services. Fresno is one of the cities listed under Punjabi places in the United States.

What do the numbers say?

Every Sikh figure for Fresno is an estimate, and this page treats it that way. The 2020 derived estimate, built from census counts of people who wrote in Sikh as their ethnicity, gives 13,743 Sikhs for the city of Fresno, 2.54 per cent, and 21,004 for Fresno County as a whole, 2.08 per cent of the county. That is the highest county total in that table.

Punjabi language data points the same way. In the American Community Survey for 2017 to 2021, the Fresno, Madera and Hanford combined area counted 16,559 Punjabi Americans, 1.36 per cent of its population. Within Fresno itself, the north central Fresno PUMA counted 4,686 Punjabis, with further thousands in the southwestern and southeastern Fresno PUMAs. A 2024 California Health Report account put the wider figure higher, at an estimated 50,000 immigrants and their descendants from Punjab living in Fresno, and called Punjabis one of the largest ethnic groups in the Central Valley. The two kinds of figure measure different things: the census derived estimate counts Sikhs, while the Health Report estimate counts Punjabis of all faiths, including descendants.

In the Central Valley as a whole, Punjabi is the third most spoken language after English and Spanish, a fact the Sikh and Punjabi American sources repeat for the valley's largest cities, including Fresno and Stockton.

First Sikhs and farm work in the southern valley

The Pluralism Project account of Gurdwara Nanaksar records that the first Sikh came to Fresno in 1906. After the First World War, in the 1920s, a larger group of about 20 Sikhs came and settled. Immigration from Punjab then largely stopped: the Immigration Act of 1924 imposed national origins quotas, and land ownership restrictions hit Punjabi farmers in California, leaving the early community relatively isolated from India.

Significant connections were re-established after the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 abolished the quota system and favoured family unification and needed skills. A new generation of Punjabi immigrants joined the descendants of the early settlers, and that combination, pioneers plus post 1965 families, is the Fresno community described by the Pluralism Project and by later reporting.

Work stayed agricultural for many families: fields, packing plants and trucking, in the words of the California Health Report, with some Punjabi residents owning farmland or other businesses and building successful careers, while older and newer low wage workers faced harder access to health care and services in Punjabi.

Gurdwaras, the Sikh Institute and Nanaksar

Fresno has many gurdwaras for a city of its size. The Pluralism Project, citing the president of the Nanaksar Gurdwara, counted seven or eight gurdwaras in Fresno, with about 300 to 400 people at a special event at Nanaksar and over 500 for Purnamashi and Sangrand. A California legislative proclamation on Sikh awareness, using a wider valley count, said there were more than a dozen Sikh temples in Fresno alone.

Named institutions in the opened sources include Gurdwara Nanaksar, on Cherry Avenue, with daily readings, daily langar open to all, and a langar hall built to serve large numbers, and the Sikh Association of Fresno, established in 1986, whose congregation later developed the Sikh Institute in Fresno with classrooms, a larger worship hall and plans for community services. The Jakara Movement, founded by Punjabi Sikh residents, also works out of Fresno gurdwaras and neighbourhoods, running health fairs, workshops in Punjabi and help with Medi-Cal, food and interpretation since its community health programme began in 2020.

Khalra Park, a school name and public recognition

West Fresno carries a public Punjabi marker that few American cities have. Jaswant Singh Khalra Park, named in 2017 for the Punjabi Sikh human rights activist, sits within walking distance of housing where many Punjabi residents live, and hosts a monthly farmers market run with the community. In January 2025 the Central Unified School District voted to name a new elementary school Jaswant Singh Khalra Elementary, reported as the first public school in the United States named after a Sikh, serving a district where 1,700 students, 10.55 per cent, were reported as Punjabi or Southeast Asian.

That recognition sits beside harder facts in the same sources. A 2014 Sikh Coalition survey reported in the Sikhism in the United States account found 54.5 per cent of Sikh students surveyed in Fresno reported being bullied, and the same account records a 2013 attack on an elderly Sikh man in Fresno investigated as a possible hate crime. The community sources do not hide those problems, and neither does this page.

Fresno's Punjabi community today

Today Fresno's Punjabis are farm owners and farm workers, truckers, doctors, teachers and shopkeepers, visible in gurdwaras across the city, in Punjabi classes and health fairs, and in the park and school that carry Khalra's name. It is a southern valley counterpart to Stockton in the north of the San Joaquin Valley and Yuba City further north in the Sacramento Valley.
