Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji (1952–2020) was a Hazoori raagi of Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, who performed kirtan at the Golden Temple from 1979 and had command of all 31 raags of the Guru Granth Sahib. In 2009 he became the first Hazoori raagi to be honoured with the Padma Shri. He died of COVID-19 on 2 April 2020.

For more than four decades, the day at Sri Harmandir Sahib opened to voices like his. Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji was a Hazoori raagi, one of the resident musicians of Darbar Sahib who sing the Guru's hymns in the raags prescribed for each hour, and he became the most honoured raagi of his generation: the first of his calling to receive the Padma Shri.
Early life and training
Nirmal Singh was born on 12 April 1952 at Jandwala Bhimeshah, a village in the Ferozepur district of Punjab, in the area that is now part of Fazilka district. Music was his chosen path early: in 1976 he completed a Diploma in Gurmat Sangeet, the Sikh sacred music tradition, from the Shaheed Missionary College at Amritsar.
He began as a teacher. In 1977 and 1978 he taught music at Gurmat College in Rishikesh, and afterwards at the Shaheed Sikh Missionary College in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, training others in the discipline that would define his life.
Hazoori raagi at Darbar Sahib
In 1979 Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji began his service as a Hazoori raagi at Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, a post he held for close to three decades. His knowledge covered all 31 raags in which the hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib are composed, a command few singers achieve, since each shabad is meant to be sung in its appointed raag.
His kirtan carried far beyond Amritsar. He performed at all five Takhts, the seats of Sikh temporal authority, at historic gurdwaras across South Asia, and in 71 countries in all, bringing the sound of Darbar Sahib to the worldwide sangat.
At Darbar Sahib the raagis sing in chaukis, successive sittings that carry the kirtan from before dawn until night, each sitting with its own appointed raags and its own mood. To hold a place in that rotation for decades, as Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji did, is to have the shrine's whole day pass through one's voice.
What is a Hazoori raagi?
A Hazoori raagi is a musician in attendance at a gurdwara, above all at Sri Darbar Sahib, whose duty is to sing kirtan, the devotional singing of the hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib, in the raags and at the times the tradition prescribes. It is a post of both musical mastery and spiritual discipline: the raagi's singing sets the rhythm of the shrine's day, from the early morning Asa di Var to the closing hymns at night.
The Padma Shri
In 2009, for his services in the field of arts, Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour of India. He was the first Hazoori raagi ever to receive it, a recognition not only of one singer but of the whole tradition of Gurmat Sangeet that he represented. In Sikh honour he also carried the title Panth Ratan.
Death in the pandemic
In March 2020, as COVID-19 reached Punjab, Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji fell ill after a round of programmes that included a kirtan samagam at Chandigarh. In the weeks before, he had travelled to Britain the previous November, met Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal at Kapurthala on 13 March, and sung at the Chandigarh samagam on 19 March. He tested positive on 1 April and was placed on a ventilator at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar. In the early hours of 2 April 2020 he died of cardiac arrest, aged 67, the fifth person in Punjab to die of the virus.
His end was marked by an episode that drew widespread condemnation. When officials took his body for cremation to Verka, a village near Amritsar, some residents, fearing infection, blocked the cremation. The SGPC and Sri Akal Takht Sahib condemned the obstruction, and his cremation was finally performed at Fatehgarh Shukarchak village. Punjab's Chief Minister Amarinder Singh led the tributes, mourning a raagi with followers across the globe.
His passing also stirred a wider reckoning. Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji came from the Mazhabi Sikh community, and commentators noted the bitter contrast between a lifetime honoured at the highest level, a Padma Shri among the honours, and the struggle to find ground for his cremation outside a frightened village. The episode became one of the early moral tests of the pandemic in Punjab.
Legacy
Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji left behind recordings of kirtan across the full range of the 31 raags, and a generation of students taught in the missionary colleges and at Amritsar. For the sangat of Darbar Sahib he remains the voice of an era: a raagi who treated the raag as a discipline of devotion, and whose honours showed that the musicians of the sanctum hold a place at the heart of the Panth.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 12 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 1952 ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਫ਼ਿਰੋਜ਼ਪੁਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਜੰਡਵਾਲਾ ਭੀਮੇਸ਼ਾਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਇਆ, ਜੋ ਹੁਣ ਫਾਜ਼ਿਲਕਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਰਾਹ ਸੀ: 1976 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਮਿਸ਼ਨਰੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਿਪਲੋਮਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ

1979 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਖੇ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਰਾਗੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਆਸਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਲਗਭਗ ਤਿੰਨ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ 31 ਰਾਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੂੰਹਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਚੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਇਹ ਕਾਬਲੀਅਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਗਾਇਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਰਾਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਗਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੂਰ ਤੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਤਖ਼ਤਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ, ਦੱਖਣੀ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਅਤੇ ਕੁੱਲ 71 ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਈ

ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਰਾਗੀ ਕੌਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?

2009 ਵਿੱਚ ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ, ਜੋ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਚੌਥਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਹ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਰਾਗੀ ਸਨ ਇਹ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਗਾਇਕ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਸਗੋਂ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਸਾਰੀ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਦੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਨਮਾਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਥ ਰਤਨ ਦਾ ਖਿਤਾਬ ਵੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ
ਮਹਾਂਮਾਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ
ਮਾਰਚ 2020 ਵਿੱਚ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਵਿਡ-19 ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ, ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਪੈ ਗਏ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸੀ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹਫ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਨਵੰਬਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ ਗਏ ਸਨ, 13 ਮਾਰਚ ਨੂੰ ਕਪੂਰਥਲਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੰਤ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੀਚੇਵਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਨ, ਅਤੇ 19 ਮਾਰਚ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ 1 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਟੈਸਟ ਪਾਜ਼ਿਟਿਵ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੈਂਟੀਲੇਟਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ 2 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 2020 ਦੀ ਸਵੇਰ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢਲੇ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲ ਦਾ ਦੌਰਾ ਪੈਣ ਨਾਲ 67 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਵਾਇਰਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੰਜਵੇਂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸਨ
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਜੁੜੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਨੇੜਲੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵੇਰਕਾ ਲੈ ਗਏ, ਤਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਲਾਗ ਦੇ ਡਰੋਂ ਸਸਕਾਰ ਰੋਕ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਸਕਾਰ ਫਤਹਿਗੜ੍ਹ ਸ਼ੁਕਰਚੱਕ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਖੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਮਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਂਜਲੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਗੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੋਗ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ
