Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji (born 1958), known across the Sikh world as Srinagar Wale, is a kirtan raagi from Ludhiana whose gentle, raag based singing of Gurbani has reached sangat on every continent. He has recorded more than 100 albums containing over 600 shabads, served as a Hazoori raagi at Sri Harmandir Sahib, and received the Padma Shri in 2025.

Ask a Sikh family anywhere in the world to name a voice of kirtan, and the name Bhai Harjinder Singh Srinagar Wale is among the first spoken. For over four decades his jatha has sung Gurbani in a slow, unhurried style that listeners call healing, and in 2025 the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contribution to devotional music.
Early life and training
Harjinder Singh was born in 1958 and raised in Ludhiana, Punjab. He was performing kirtan from a young age; accounts describe him as largely self taught, learning by listening and by practice. In 1975 he was given a place with the jatha of Sant Giani Kartar Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, where he developed as a raagi. He also trained formally at the SGPC run Gurmat Sangeet College in Amritsar, completing a two year course in shabad kirtan.
That training matters to his sound. Gurmat Sangeet is not simply singing with a harmonium: it is the discipline of singing each shabad in the raag named for it in the Guru Granth Sahib, with the string and percussion traditions that Sikh musicians have carried since the time of the Gurus. Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji's devotion to that discipline, rather than to popular tunes, is what his teachers and his listeners both point to.
Why is he called Srinagar Wale?
The name has nothing to do with birth. In 1980 Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji began his kirtan career at Srinagar, in Kashmir, forming a jatha with his younger brother Bhai Maninder Singh and, on tabla, Bhai Harnaam Singh, who later became a Hazoori raagi at Sri Harmandir Sahib. The jatha served at Srinagar for three years before moving to Ludhiana in 1983.
At Ludhiana they performed at the Sabzi Mandi Gurdwara, and it was there that the sangat began calling him Sri Nagar Wale, the one from Srinagar. He tells that he did not know of the suffix himself until a devotee printed the jatha's first business card with the name Bhai Harjinder Singh Sri Nagar Wale on it. The name stayed for life.
The jatha and its style
The jatha's sound is a deliberate contrast to hurried devotional music: classical raag and modern raag based tunes played slowly, with Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji as lead vocalist at the harmonium and his brother supporting, in a style described as slow and mellow and deeply suited to Gurbani kirtan. Bhai Maninder Singh later formed his own jatha, and the two brothers have often performed at the same events as separate groups, including Atam Ras kirtan programmes in the United Kingdom.
Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji has also served as a Hazoori raagi at Sri Harmandir Sahib, singing daily Gurbani kirtan at the Golden Temple, and his jatha has led kirtan across India and in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia.
The jatha has also been a school. Musicians who sat within it have gone on to lead jathas of their own, among them Bhai Gagandeep Singh, who played harmonium in the group before forming his own jatha, known as Sri Ganga Nagar Wale. The pattern repeats the way kirtan has always travelled: from teacher to student, and from one jatha to the next.
Recordings: the Guru's word on 100 albums
Few raagis have recorded so much. Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji has released over 100 albums containing more than 600 shabads, and his recordings now stream on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and JioSaavn, carrying his unhurried style to listeners who may never sit in the gurdwaras where he sings. In his own words: I am where I am today because of the Shabad Guru. I am merely a singer of the Guru's praises; if anyone is to be praised, it is the Guru Granth and the Guru Panth.
Honours
In 2013 he was honoured at Sri Akal Takht Sahib for his lifelong service to Gurmat Sangeet. In January 2025 his name appeared in the Padma Awards list, and in April 2025 President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Shri on him at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, for his contribution to the arts. The Governor of Punjab, Gulab Chand Kataria, felicitated him at Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh, in June 2025, and Sikh leaders across parties praised a lifetime spent in the Guru's kirtan. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora and Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan were among those who publicly honoured him, and his suggestions were sought for the commemoration of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
Legacy
Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji continues to live in Ludhiana, to perform at major religious events and to mentor younger artists. His legacy is already audible: a generation of raagis shaped by his patience with a raag, and millions of listeners for whom his voice is the sound of Gurbani at peace.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੀਨਗਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਇਸ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨਹੀਂ 1980 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੀਨਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਭਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਤਬਲੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਜਥਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ, ਜੋ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਰਾਗੀ ਬਣੇ ਜਥੇ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰੀਨਗਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ 1983 ਵਿੱਚ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਆ ਗਿਆ
ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਬਜ਼ੀ ਮੰਡੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਗਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਭਾਵ ਸ੍ਰੀਨਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਏ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਦ ਇਸ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਉਦੋਂ ਲੱਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਨੇ ਜਥੇ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਬਿਜ਼ਨਸ ਕਾਰਡ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਗਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਛਪਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਇਹ ਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ
