The Sikh Center of the San Francisco Bay Area, also known as Gurdwara Sahib of El Sobrante, is a Sikh gurdwara at 3550 Hillcrest Road in unincorporated El Sobrante, California, established in May 1979. Its large golden domes crown a pink, cream and beige tiled building on a wooded East Bay hillside, and the temple is open to drop-in visitors every day.

What is the Sikh Center of the San Francisco Bay Area?

It is the East Bay's hilltop gurdwara: a working temple about twenty five miles north of San Francisco, serving Sikhs across the Bay Area, and the reason its formal name speaks of the whole bay rather than one small unincorporated community. Before it existed, local Sikhs held their religious ceremonies in their homes; as more Sikhs immigrated to the Bay Area in the 1970s, the community decided it needed a temple of its own for weddings, Akhand Path ceremonies and daily worship. The Center they built now holds regular services every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning, serves langar free every day to all visitors, Sikh or non-Sikh, and from the deck on the second floor's northeast wing offers a wide view over the El Sobrante valley and San Pablo Bay.

History: from home ceremonies to a hilltop temple

The Center was established in May 1979, the answer to a simple problem: the East Bay's Sikh families had outgrown their front rooms. Through the 1970s, as more and more Sikhs immigrated to the Bay Area, the community decided it needed a proper temple for the ceremonies of Sikh life, weddings, Akhand Path readings and the daily round of prayer, and it chose a hilltop in the El Sobrante valley hills, about twenty five miles north of San Francisco. The building that rose there, with its tiled walls and great golden domes, became the community's landmark, and its architecture and its hilltop setting still draw visitors who come simply to see the site.

The name the founders chose says what the temple was for. Not El Sobrante's gurdwara alone, but the Sikh Center of the San Francisco Bay Area: a regional institution for a population spread from Richmond and Oakland across the whole bay. That regional role is why its calendar runs from the intimate to the large, from a family's Akhand Path to weddings that fill the driveway, and why its summer camps draw children from across the East Bay.

Architecture: golden domes on the hilltop

The building is a tiled, arched structure in pink, cream and beige, crowned with large golden domes, and set into its green hillside so that the domes read from across the valley. Inside, the prayer hall is lit by a skylight that throws a natural spotlight on the space before the Guru Granth Sahib, with marble floors below and large balconies above. For weddings, a Sikh speciality here, the big front driveway carries the baraat, the groom's procession, up to the entrance doors where the milni, the meeting of the two families, takes place, and photographers prize the morning and evening light on the gilded domes.

Daily life: services, langar and summer camps

The site is open to drop-in visitors from 5:00 in the morning to 8:30 in the evening. Langar, the collective meal eaten sitting together on the floor, is given daily, free of cost, to all visitors. Visitors cover their hair, enter barefoot after washing their feet, and carry no alcohol, tobacco or drugs on the premises. In the summer the Center runs camps for school students from kindergarten to grade 12, teaching Sikh history and music in a school day structure with time to eat and to play, building the community the temple was founded to serve. Weddings and Akhand Paths, the continuous readings of the Guru Granth Sahib, fill the calendar through the year.

The 2000 shooting and its aftermath

The temple's history also holds days its congregation will never forget. In 1985 a man was shot at the temple after snatching off another worshipper's turban. And on Sunday 23 January 2000, as the afternoon service was ending and hundreds of people were gathered, a worshipper named Joga Singh Sandher, who had been refused a second chance to address the congregation, fetched a rifle from his vehicle and opened fire. He killed Ajmer Singh Malhi, a temple leader, a mathematics teacher at Skyline High School in Oakland and a father of three, and injured another worshipper before congregants subdued him; Malhi's 96 year old father was the first to disarm him. Sandher was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to 50 years to life. In 2022 the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office opposed a recommendation to resentence him, and Malhi's family and dozens of gurdwara members attended the court hearing to oppose any reduction of the term; the parole board denied him early release, finding he still posed an unreasonable risk to public safety. The Center worships on, with that date part of its story.

How do you visit the El Sobrante Gurdwara?

The Sikh Center stands at 3550 Hillcrest Road, El Sobrante, CA 94803, on its hilltop in the El Sobrante hills, a short drive from Interstate 80 through Richmond. Come any day between 5:00 am and 8:30 pm, cover your head, wash your feet, enter barefoot, and accept the langar. It is one of three Bay Area gurdwaras with full entries in this Kosh, alongside Gurdwara Sahib of Fremont and the Sikh Gurdwara Sahib of San Jose, and all three are listed in our guide to Gurdwaras in the USA.
