Gurdwara Sahib Yuba City is a Sikh temple at 2468 Tierra Buena Road in Yuba City, California, formally opened in 1970 as the first gurdwara in the United States built in a traditional Indo-Persian style. It is the religious heart of the Yuba-Sutter Punjabi community, and each November it hosts the Yuba City Nagar Kirtan, one of the largest Sikh gatherings outside India.

What is Gurdwara Sahib Yuba City?

It is the oldest and largest gurdwara of the Yuba-Sutter area, a farming region in the Sacramento Valley with one of the largest Punjabi American populations in North America. For local families it is the place of daily prayer, weddings, birth ceremonies and final prayers, of Punjabi classes and of the langar hall. For the wider Sikh world it is known above all for its Nagar Kirtan, the hymn singing procession founded in 1980 that now draws well over 100,000 people to this small city on the first weekend of November.

History: the temple the orchard country built

Punjabi Sikhs had been settling in the Yuba-Sutter area since the early twentieth century, farming peaches, prunes, walnuts and rice, but for worship they had to travel more than 90 miles along country roads to the gurdwara at Stockton. After the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, Sikh families arrived in far larger numbers, and the need for a temple of their own became urgent. In 1969 the community celebrated the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at the Yuba Sutter Fairgrounds, and there the plan for a Yuba City gurdwara was announced to rejoicing crowds.

On 28 October 1969, twenty six individuals and their families formed a nonprofit corporation, the Sikh Temple Gurdwara, Yuba City, and fundraising began. Two brothers, Bakhtawar and Udham Singh Purewal, donated three acres of their farmland, part of an almond orchard on Tierra Buena Road. Community leaders including Didar Singh Bains, who would become famous as the Peach King of California peaches, and Dr Narinder Singh Kapany gave land and money, a Gurdwara Committee commissioned an architect and secured financing, and the groundbreaking was held in 1969 to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 500th birth anniversary. The temple opened the following year, in 1970, with a spacious worship hall and a langar hall. Architecture: the first Indo-Persian gurdwara in the USA

The Tierra Buena temple holds a first in American Sikh architecture: it was the first gurdwara in the United States built in the traditional Indo-Persian style, its grand facade and white dome announcing a Punjabi temple in the middle of California orchard country rather than a converted hall. The building runs to more than 18,000 square feet, with a large prayer hall and a communal kitchen at its core. An annex added later houses a library, classrooms and meeting halls, a health centre, and apartments for the granthis, the readers of the Guru Granth Sahib who serve the temple full time. A private school opened at the temple in 1984.

Significance: the heart of Punjabi Yuba-Sutter

The archive at UC Davis credits this gurdwara with transforming the religious and social life of its community. Major Sikh festivals are observed here alongside the life cycle itself, and women play an active role in its services, its committees and the huge volunteer effort of its langar kitchen. The temple also became the community's bridge to its neighbours: leader Hari Singh Everest served for decades as its ambassador, speaking in local churches and hosting church groups at the gurdwara, and open houses and interfaith seminars continue that work today. In a region where Punjabi is heard in the markets and Sikh families shape farming, business and civic life, Tierra Buena Road is where that world gathers.

The Yuba City Nagar Kirtan

The gurdwara's gift to the wider world began in 1980, when Didar Singh Bains, inspired by a similar procession he had seen in Canada, helped found the annual Sikh parade, the Nagar Kirtan. Held on the first full weekend of November, it honours Guru Gadee, the inauguration of the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. The weekend opens on Friday with a Kirtan Darbar and fireworks, continues on Saturday with the raising of the Nishan Sahib, an open house and the all evening Rain Sabaee Kirtan, and ends on Sunday with the procession itself: the Guru Granth Sahib carried in a decorated palanquin, led by the Panj Pyare, with floats from gurdwaras across California and beyond following a loop of about four and a half miles while volunteers serve langar along the route. The 45th Nagar Kirtan, in 2024, brought over 100,000 visitors to Yuba City, and weekend estimates run from 100,000 to more than 200,000 people.
