Chardi kala is a spirit of rising optimism, held on to even in hard times. It is a core idea in Sikh thought and an everyday Punjabi way of saying someone is in good spirits.
Meaning
Literally, ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ (chardi) means rising or ascending, and ਕਲਾ (kala) means spirit, energy or strength. Together they describe a mind that stays positive and steady, whatever happens.
It is not the same as simple cheerfulness. Chardi kala carries acceptance of hardship alongside the resolve to keep going.
Where it comes from
The phrase is closely tied to Sikh tradition. The Ardas, the prayer said at the close of Sikh services, ends with these lines:
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ॥ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ॥
Nanak, through the Name comes rising spirit; by Your will, may all be well. (From the Ardas)
How it's used
- 1ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਂ।By the Guru's grace, we are in high spirits. A common reply to “How are you?”
- 2ਹਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਟੀਮ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹੀ।Even after the loss, the team stayed in good spirits.
- 3ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਰੱਖੋ, ਸਭ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।Keep your spirits up; everything will be all right.
