ਦਾਦਾ (dada) is your father's father. The patriarch of the paternal line, he is the head of the traditional Punjabi joint family.
Meaning
ਦਾਦਾ (dada) is the Punjabi word for your father's father — your paternal grandfather. He is the counterpart of the ਨਾਨਾ (nana, mother's father): the dada heads the father's side of the family, the side whose name the children carry. The two grandfathers are never confused in Punjabi speech.
In the traditional joint family, the dada is the patriarch — the final authority on land, money, marriages, and disputes. His word settles matters not just for his sons but for the whole extended household, including the families of his brothers in some cases. Even in families that have long since split into nuclear homes, the dada's opinion retains a ceremonial weight.
He is addressed as ਦਾਦਾ ਜੀ. For grandchildren, the relationship is often one of awe mixed with deep affection: the dada who seems stern to the world is frequently gentle with the little ones who climb onto his knees.
Cultural context
The dada embodies continuity. He is the living link to the family's past — he knows which ancestor cleared which field, where the family came from, and what the old customs were. When Punjabi families trace their lineage, it is the dada's line they trace, and his stories that supply the details.
His authority in the old system was practical as well as moral. Land was held jointly, earnings were pooled, and the eldest male managed both. The dada decided when land was divided, approved marriages, and represented the family to the village. Younger generations who grew up under this system describe a household run with a firm but usually fair hand.
Today the dada's role has softened into something more like a revered elder statesman. He may no longer manage the family's affairs, but his presence at the head of the table during festivals, his blessings at weddings, and his stories on winter evenings remain central to what makes a Punjabi family feel like a family.
