Din is the Punjabi word for day — the daylight hours of work, and by extension a date or an era.
Meaning
Din means day: the daylight hours from sunrise to sunset, the time of work and activity. "Din" also means a day as a unit of time — "tin din" (three days) — and, in a grander sense, an era or times, as in "change din" (good days).
The word frames the Punjabi day: din charhe (sunrise, literally "the day climbs"), din ddhale (sunset, "the day declines"). The farmer's din begins before dawn and ends with the light.
Origin and etymology
Din comes from the Sanskrit dina, meaning day. It is one of the basic time-words of the language, old as the counting of days itself.
Punjabi also uses din in compounds and phrases that measure life: "din raat" (day and night, constantly), "dinon din" (day by day).
Cultural context
The din is the unit of Punjabi working life. The farmer reads the din in the sun's position; the shopkeeper opens with the din; festivals are counted in din. To wish someone "change din" (good days) is to wish them a good life.
Punjabi fatalism and hope both speak in din: "bure din" (bad days) will pass, "change din" will come. The wheel of din turns for everyone, and patience is the wisdom of waiting for it.
