Fateh means victory — and in the Sikh greeting it declares that all victory belongs to God, not to the Khalsa.
Meaning
Fateh means victory or triumph, from the Persian fath. In Sikh life the word lives inside the Khalsa greeting: 'Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh' — the Khalsa belongs to God, and victory belongs to God. The pairing is deliberate: the community claims nothing for itself, not even its triumphs.
The greeting is exchanged whenever Sikhs meet, it closes every Ardas, and it is the response of the sangat to the jaikara 'Bole So Nihal' — whoever speaks shall be fulfilled — answered with 'Sat Sri Akal', true is the Timeless One. Fateh is the note of confidence running through all of it: the Sikh faces the world certain that righteousness wins.
Origin and history
The greeting was given to the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh himself. After creating the Khalsa in 1699, the Guru replaced ordinary greetings among his Sikhs with this declaration — so that every meeting of two Sikhs would begin by remembering whom they serve and where victory truly lies.
The word also rings through Sikh history in 'Fateh' as battle-cry and celebration: the Khalsa's victories against empire were announced as God's fateh, never the army's — a humility in triumph that Sikh tradition has carefully preserved.
Cultural context
Sikhs answer the phone with 'Fateh', end letters with it, and greet elders by saying 'Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa' and receiving 'Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh' in return — the greeting is split between the two speakers like a handshake in words.
Children learn it early, and for Sikhs living far from Punjab it is an instant bond: two strangers who exchange the fateh recognise each other as family.
