Gaana (ਗਾਉਣਾ) is the Punjabi verb "to sing" — the voice raised in joy, worship and story.
Meaning
Gaana — properly written ਗਾਉਣਾ — means to sing: to make music with the voice. Punjabis sing while working, while celebrating, while worshipping; the verb covers the mother's lullaby and the concert stage alike.
The dictionary form is gauna, though in fast speech it often sounds like "gaana". Both are understood everywhere; the written standard is ਗਾਉਣਾ.
Origin and etymology
Gauna is an old verb of the region's speech for singing. Song is as old as speech itself, and the word for it belongs to the most ancient layer of the language.
The same family gives "geet" (song) and "gayan" (singing), shared across North India.
Cultural context
Punjab sings. Folk songs mark every occasion — birth, marriage, harvest, parting; Sikh worship is built on kirtan, the singing of Gurbani; and Punjabi music, from folk legends to global pop, carries the language worldwide.
To "gauna" is also to praise: singing someone's praises, singing the Guru's glory. The voice is Punjabi culture's first instrument, and everyone is expected to use it.
