ਗਮ

gham
Say itGHUMTypeNoun
In short

Gham is the Punjabi word for sorrow and grief — the ache of loss, borne with dignity and shared with others.

Meaning

Gham means sorrow or grief: the heavy feeling that comes with loss, disappointment or suffering. It can be the sharp grief of a death in the family, or the quieter ache of separation, failure or longing.

In Punjabi the word is dignified rather than dramatic. To be "in gham" is to carry a real weight, and the language treats that weight with respect — grief is not hidden, but it is borne with steadiness, often in the company of family and community.

Origin and etymology

Gham comes from the Arabic-Persian gham (غم), meaning sorrow or grief. It entered Punjabi long ago through Persian literary and everyday usage and is now among the language's most familiar words for the darker side of feeling.

It appears constantly in Punjabi and Urdu poetry, where the sorrows of love and of life are among the great themes.

Cultural context

Punjabi culture does not ask people to grieve alone. When gham strikes a family, neighbours and relatives gather — for the antim ardas or the funeral rites, for shared meals, for simply sitting together. The community carries part of the weight.

Punjabi music, especially the sad songs of folk and film, gives gham a voice. Singers have long turned heartbreak and loss into art, and listeners find their own sorrows recognised and eased in those songs.
