hal
Say itHULTypeNounShahmukhiہل
In short

The hal is the plough — the wooden-and-iron implement, drawn by bullocks, that opened Punjab's fields for centuries. To 'hold the hal' meant to farm.

Meaning

ਹਲ (hal) is the plough — the implement that opens the earth for sowing. The traditional Punjabi hal was wood and iron: a wooden beam, an iron share that cut the soil, drawn by a pair of bullocks. To “hold the hal” (ਹਲ ਫੜਨਾ) meant to farm; to be yoked to it was the definition of the cultivator’s life.

The hal is among the oldest tools in human history, and in Punjab it was, until a generation ago, the tool on which every meal depended.

Origin and etymology

The word comes from Sanskrit ਹਲ (hala), the plough — attested in the oldest Indian literature. Few Punjabi words have carried their meaning so unchanged for so long.

Cultural context

Ploughing — ਵਾਹੀ — was the central labour of the agricultural year, done in the cool of morning with the bullocks’ bells ringing. The hal turned the stubble under, opened the soil to the sun, and made the seedbed. Saints and poets used the hal as their great metaphor: the Guru’s word ploughs the mind as the hal ploughs the field.

The tractor has replaced the wooden hal almost everywhere in Punjab, and the bullock pair with it — but in language the hal endures, in proverbs, in songs, and in the word ਹਾਲੀ, the ploughman, which is built upon it.
