In short

To fill someone's ears — to whisper poison, to turn a person against someone else through sly, persistent talk.

Literal meaning

Kann means ear, bharna is to fill. The literal image is of pouring something into someone's ears until they are full — and what is poured is not water but words: complaints, suspicions, and slander.

The ears are full, so nothing else can get in — not the other side of the story, not reason. The image perfectly captures how prejudice works.

What it really means

The saying means to poison someone's mind against another person by whispering against them — the classic work of the backbiter and the schemer. 'Us ne malak de kann bhar ditte' means he turned the boss against us with his tales.

It is always malicious or at least mischievous. The ear-filler works in secret, and the victim often does not know their mind has been filled until the damage shows.

Cultural context

This muhavra names one of the most distrusted characters in Punjabi social life: the chugalkhor (backbiter). Folk tales, proverbs, and everyday gossip all warn against those who fill ears.

It reflects the importance of direct speech in the culture. The honourable way is to speak face to face; filling ears behind someone's back is cowardly. Elders use the phrase to teach children to hear both sides before judging.
