The khanda is the double-edged sword at the centre of Sikh life — the weapon that stirs the amrit and the emblem of the faith.
Meaning
A khanda is a straight, double-edged sword, broad at the hilt and sharpening toward the point. In Sikh life it carries two great meanings. Practically, it is the sword with which the Panj Piare stir the amrit during the initiation ceremony — khande di pahul, the baptism of the double-edged sword.
Symbolically, the khanda stands at the centre of the Sikh emblem that bears its name: a vertical double-edged sword ringed by a chakkar (a throwing quoin, the circle of divine unity with no beginning and no end), with two crossed kirpans below representing spiritual and temporal power — the Sikh ideal of miri-piri. The khanda itself signifies divine power cutting through falsehood and injustice.
Origin and history
The double-edged sword has deep roots in Indian warrior tradition, and it became sacred to the Sikhs through the martial culture fostered by Guru Hargobind and brought to full flower by Guru Gobind Singh. The Guru's invocation of the sword as Bhagauti — divine power that destroys evil — runs through the compositions of the Dasam Granth, and the Ardas itself opens 'Sri Bhagauti Ji Sahai', by the aid of the holy sword.
The khanda emblem in its modern form — sword, chakkar and crossed kirpans — became the universally recognised symbol of Sikhism in the twentieth century. It flies on the Nishan Sahib, crowns gurdwara domes, and is worn as jewellery by Sikhs everywhere.
Cultural context
For Sikhs the khanda is not a celebration of violence but of the duty to resist it: the sword exists to protect the defenceless, never to oppress. That is why it stirs the sweet amrit — strength tempered by compassion.
You will see the khanda emblem wherever Sikhs gather: on flags, gates, rumallas (the cloths covering the Guru Granth Sahib), wedding cards and tattoos. To a Sikh child, it is as instantly recognisable as a cross is to a Christian child.
