ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪਾਓ

Literal meaning

Mitti means earth or dust, and pao is the imperative of pauna, to put. Put earth on it — the image is of shovelling soil over something so it disappears from sight. In village life, earth is what you throw over rubbish or over a grave; once it is covered, it is gone.

The phrase is a command or a plea: 'mitti pao, gall khatam karo' — put earth on it, end the matter. It is short, blunt, and final.

What it really means

The muhavra is used to shut down a dispute, a rumour, or a painful memory. When elders say 'mitti pao', they mean: stop digging this up, stop arguing, let it be forgotten. It is forgiveness and pragmatism in two words.

It can be warm or stern. A grandmother settling a fight between brothers uses it lovingly; a village elder shutting down gossip uses it with authority. Either way, it marks the point where the community agrees to move on.

Cultural context

This saying reflects a deep Punjabi value: that endless raking over old quarrels destroys families and villages. The earth-burial image is powerful because in agrarian Punjab, what is buried in the soil truly disappears and, in time, feeds new growth.

It is closely related to the Sikh and Punjabi emphasis on letting go of grudges. The phrase is also heard in Punjabi music, where singers ask old lovers to 'put earth' on past mistakes and start fresh.
